On March 10th 2022 Lucille Collard, Liberal MPP Ottawa Vanier, introduced Bill 99, Protection from Coerced Debts Incurred in relation to Human Trafficking Act, 2022
This Act comes on the heels of US President Joe Biden signing into law the Debt Burden Relief Act approved with bipartisan support in the US Congress.
This Act has no impact on the majority of major Canadian creditors who already have developed processes to address the financial fraud survivors face post exploitation.
It ensure Survivors of human trafficking are not revictimized and pursued by creditors unwilling to recognize the financial fraud and coercion involved in human trafficking.
No victim should ever have to pay for the credit facilities through which they were bought and sold.
